Questions We Always Get...

Before we give any answers, we’ll evaluate using specific orthopedic tests in addition to a detailed nerve exam that will show us exactly what nerves are misbehaving where. Typically, the muscle is firing correctly. Meaning it is contracting fine and stretching fine, which is all muscles are designed to do. So the muscle not firing isn’t the issue. Usually from our diagnostic nerve test we can show the nerve giving this “dysfunctional” muscle it’s ability to know what to do, is usually over active/sensitive.

You’ll know if this is the case if you are unable to use a massage gun on the area because it “hurts too bad”. However, when that same massage gun is used somewhere else, it “feels great”. This is due to nerve hypersensitivity, not “muscle not firing” creating dysfunction.

A typical answer at Birmingham Health is “it depends”. 1st we have to figure out what is happening this time. Then we can compare it to what used to be happening.

Typically chiropractic adjustments are extremely effective. Many of patients receive relief within the first 1-6 treatments. However, if adjustments stopped working as well as they used to, we have to consider has time and the repetition of our patients daily work and play habits further deteriorated certain areas.

If so, we have to determine how bad. Once we’re able to determine your current health status, we will be able show you how to reverse engineer where you currently are and help you get back to where you want to be. If you’re willing to follow our recommendations, we will most likely be able to help you with your goals.

Again, if areas have deteriorated too severe, appropriate referrals will be made to the right specialty.

Typically our first goal is to assess your needs and determine if the treatments we offer are safe for you. Once this is determined, we have our patients come back as early as the next day to help us set appropriate goals. After goals have been set, we know how to help you and can begin treatment.

Typically patients that have called us to transfer their care have usually either got out rhythm of seeing their previous chiropractor or wasn’t getting the outcomes they’d hope for.  Because of Dr. Casey’s background in assisting athletic trainers and physical therapists, he appreciates the different modalities and techniques that have been used to help people recover from surgeries and getting back to the field after being banged up.

Dr. Casey before becoming a chiropractic physician used to work under his father, Dr. Don Casey, D.O. He gained appreciation for osteopathic medicine and its capabilities to get patient’s back to work or back to the field.

At Birmingham Health, we will don’t just evaluate and manage the site of pain to help our patients “hopefully reach their goals”. We take a global approach to the body. This is standard philosophy in both Osteopathic (medical physicians like his dad wit hcredentials D.O. are medical doctors of osteopathy) and Chiropractic.  Our team is trained to evaluate the source of nerve issues and muscles around the area of pain that attach to joints above and below where it hurts.

When all these areas are addressed, we commonly hear patients say “that feels so much better. No one has adjusted that before. My adjustments last longer”.

This one hurts because there’s so many patients that has asked us this very question. Typically these patients have seen a variety of specialities for hope to include neuros, orthos, physical therapists, massage therapists, other chiropractors and acupuncturists. They have  even self medicated and self diagnosed themselves to some level with little or no success.

Our heart goes out to them because of how this is keeping them from having the quality of life they should have and all of the things that their health condition keeps them from doing.

We first must understand more of their individual case. Once we’re able to determine successes and losses in previous care, we’ll set these patients up for our evaluations that combine different methods.

The goals that should be set have different layers. We say it like that because we are realistic and we must set realistic goals, with realistic outcomes. An area of concern, is when a patient has asked us to work a miracle without giving treatment enough time to see certain results, as well as, not following through with all our recommendations.

Our first step is to identify the biggest missing puzzle piece that has to be addressed in this current moment even if it’s something you addressed it in the past.

The next step is to add puzzle pieces based off levels of improvement or lack there of. These cases must have the flexibility of the tug of war battle that usually occurs with their symptoms. It’s a rollercoaster effect which is why we continue to re-evaluate through our journey at each pivot point every few weeks. If improvement isn’t being reached the way our health team expects, new recommendations will be laid out.

One challenge we have seen is patients that have asked us to work miracles but aren’t willing to commit to the long journey. We can empathize how much time and resources have been utilized before these patients have even called us. We have full transparency n our clinic so we can avoid miscommunication.
